Starlathe is a 2D top-down space sim where the entire galaxy actually feels alive. Everything is happening in real time, even when you’re not there watching it. Miners are constantly pulling ore from asteroid fields, transport ships are moving goods between stations, factories are using resources to make new products, and huge war fleets are fighting over territory across 150 different sectors. Nothing just magically appears—every shipment has to be transported, every ship has to fly somewhere, and every destroyed ship leaves behind a real wreck.
You can start by mining asteroid fields and refining the ore into more valuable materials. From there, you can get into trading and move more than 50 different goods around the galaxy. Buy stuff where it’s cheap, transport it to places where people actually need it, and make money from the difference. The economy reacts to real supply and demand, so prices can change depending on what’s happening across the galaxy.
Of course, you can also get into combat. You can work with different factions and hunt pirates, or you can just become a pirate yourself and deal with the reputation that comes with it. There’s also a full production system where you can refine materials, create components, and eventually craft weapons, ship modules, and even entire ships.
Once you start making money, you can buy more ships and give each one a specific job. You can have miners bringing in resources, transporters running your trade routes, and escorts protecting your convoys. Eventually, you can even command a massive dreadnought as your flagship. Battles happen ship-to-ship in real time, with turrets, rockets, energy beams, and point-defense systems actually doing the fighting instead of some random dice roll deciding everything.
The galaxy can also change because of what happens in the game. Stations can be destroyed, forcing evacuations and leaving behind wrecks and loot fields before factions eventually rebuild them. Territory can change hands, the law can react to smuggling and piracy, and your reputation follows you wherever you go. The fog of war also keeps most of the galaxy hidden until you actually explore and chart it.
There’s plenty more to discover too, including massive ship graveyards, abandoned sectors, wild space beyond the gates, and 22 different skies to fly under. Basically, Starlathe is all about exploring, mining, trading, fighting, building fleets, and watching a huge space economy and war system play out around you in real time.
