Gears of War: E-Day takes you back to the beginning of one of the biggest events in the series. Set fourteen years before the original Gears of War, the game follows Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago during Emergence Day, when the Locust Horde suddenly comes up from underground and throws the world into complete chaos. You’ll fight through the destruction, work with your squad, and try to survive while humanity is basically being pushed to the edge.
The game has a full campaign that you can play alone or with friends. You can also team up with up to four players across Campaign, Horde Siege, and Versus. Horde Siege is a new take on the classic Gears wave-survival mode, with larger maps, more players, bigger battles, and tougher enemies. Pick a class like Assault, Marksman, Medic, or Breacher, then jump into a four-player squad and fight back against the Locust.
You can even team up with multiple squads to complete shared objectives and take down huge world bosses. Survive long enough to earn rewards, unlock customization options, and improve your loadout for the next match. If you prefer competitive multiplayer, Versus brings new maps and updated 4v4 modes. You can play Ranked if you want serious competition and climb the leaderboards, or jump into Social playlists when you just want to have fun.
The classic Gears cover-based combat is still here, but it has been upgraded with smoother movement and more freedom. You can jump, vault, slide, flank enemies, and move around the battlefield in new ways while still using cover as a huge part of combat. Familiar weapons are back with new designs, along with brand-new weapons made for brutal close-range fights.
The atmosphere is also much darker and more brutal. The Locust and other enemies have been reimagined to feel more threatening, while new creatures and villains help bring back that horror feeling from the early days of the series. The environments are more detailed and realistic too, making the world feel dangerous and completely out of control during Emergence Day.
Built from the ground up in Unreal Engine 5, the game is designed to deliver a much more immersive Gears experience. On supported hardware, you can play in 4K with HDR10, ray-traced lighting, reflections, and shadows, along with features like NVIDIA DLSS 4.5, AMD FSR “Redstone,” Frame Generation, Variable Rate Shading, ultrawide support, uncapped frame rates, and a built-in benchmark mode.
PC players also get plenty of customization, including keyboard and mouse or controller remapping, different display modes, and support for 21:9 and 32:9 ultrawide screens. The game is optimized for handheld devices like Steam Deck, Xbox Ally X, and Xbox Ally as well. With optional account linking, you can use roaming saves, connect with friends, send cross-platform invites, and jump into 2–4 player online co-op or competitive multiplayer for up to 8 players on supported platforms.
Overall, Gears of War: E-Day goes back to the moment everything started and turns it into a darker, bigger, and more modern Gears experience. Whether you’re playing through the origin story, surviving Horde Siege with friends, or jumping into competitive matches, there’s a lot of brutal action waiting for you.
