Alright, so here's the deal with CATO: Buttered Cat. It's this super adorable puzzle platformer that plays off the whole buttered-cat paradox meme. You know, cats always land on their feet, and toast always lands buttered-side down, right? Well, imagine strapping a piece of buttered toast to a cat's back. Boom, you’ve got yourself a floating, spinning butter-cat that just keeps going forever in some wild, infinite motion loop! In the game, you've got two main stars—"Cat" and "Buttered Toast." The whole idea is to use how they interact to crack puzzles at every level. And trust me there are loads of levels. We’re talking over 140 main levels and 60 side levels. Plus, hidden rooms, boss fights, and fun mini-games are sprinkled in there too. Oh, and get this—there's an outfit system! You can collect 30+ skins for both Cat and Toast. Yep, you can totally deck out your characters. You control the cat as it zooms left and right, climbs stuff, and even squeezes through pipes (cats are basically liquid, right?). Meanwhile, you guide the toast to jump like a little rocket, the longer you hold down the button, the farther it goes! The adventure is spread across five different worlds each pack with its own weird gadgets. We're talking about toasters (which, of course, the toast is like, "NOOO!!"), butter trampolines, and even space pipes that speed things up (cue the cat going “Meow!!"). Along the way, some mysterious buddies show up to give you a hand with puzzles too. The game is mostly about puzzle to solve with just a dash of action. You don’t have to stress about difficult platforming for the most part—just focus on cracking those puzzles. But, of course, there are some annoying enemies trying to mess things up. Don’t worry though, you’ve got what you need to deal with them. Plus, as you level up, you’ll unlock mini-games, and you can play them anytime in your little hideout once you’ve collected them. There are also tons of secret rooms hidden in the game, only accessible through sneaky passageways. Inside you will find Easter eggs and mysterious items from other worlds. You can bring these back to your hideout, suit up in your favorite outfit and jump back into the adventure.
So, what's the whole cat and toast duo even searching for? The story’s kind of scattered but you will piece it together as you explore the game. Team Woll—that's the crew behind the game—was founded by programmer Blasin and artist Frank after they teamed up during the BOOOM Gamejam 2022. People loved the CATO: Buttered Cat concept during the event, so they turned it into a full-blown game. It took them two years, all done remotely, to finish this thing, and it's their first-ever game.
