"Grief Like a Stray Dog" is a short interactive play that hits hard. It is about a 13-year-old girl Nadia, who lives in a rural a village during World War II. While the world around her is tearing itself apart, she’s just trying to get the mail out, delivering papers, letters, and, sadly, death notifications to families of soldiers who didn’t make it home. The game takes a real personal spin, with Nadia’s character being based on the author’s own grandmother. The whole story pulls from the author’s childhood in a village near Rzhev, one of the toughest spots on the Eastern Front, and a lot of the events and letters you see are based on actual stories passed down through family and locals.
The visual style of the game has some real emotional depth taking inspiration from kid's drawings, neo-expressionism, Russian lubok art, and Soviet-era book illustrations.
