The world of Ark of Artemis has been completely messed up by a huge angelic disaster, and things are still pretty rough. You play as Claudia, whose journey starts when she receives a letter from the Chivalric Order telling her to head toward the Demon Continent. Things go wrong pretty quickly when she gets ambushed and barely survives by awakening the power of a divine weapon. After that, she discovers a powerful creature trapped inside ice, and this one encounter pulls her into a much bigger problem involving ancient powers, dangerous angels, and questions about her own future. The story is also a standalone side story connected to LAST EMBRYO, so you don't need to know the previous games to understand Claudia's adventure.
The combat uses a classic turn-based RPG system, so you’ll take turns attacking enemies, using different skills, managing your resources, and looking for enemy weaknesses. As you move through the story, you’ll complete quests, improve your characters, and collect better equipment to prepare for tougher battles. There’s also a quest guide that helps you figure out where to go next, which is useful if you don’t want to spend ages wandering around trying to find your next objective.
If you mainly care about the story, the game even has an optional invincibility setting that makes the combat much easier. But if you actually want the normal RPG challenge, you can turn that off and focus on building your party, choosing the right skills, and making smart decisions during battles.
Ark of Artemis is more focused on its story and characters than being a massive open-world RPG. It has that classic Japanese indie RPG feel, with a post-apocalyptic fantasy world filled with divine weapons, demons, angels, and mysterious creatures. Claudia’s personal story is at the center of everything, which gives the adventure a more focused feel instead of throwing hundreds of random systems at you.
The turn-based combat is easy to understand, making the game pretty accessible even if you’re not a hardcore RPG player. At the same time, the dark world and the aftermath of the angelic apocalypse give the story a more serious atmosphere. If you enjoy shorter RPG adventures, classic JRPG-style storytelling, or character-focused fantasy games, Ark of Artemis is a pretty interesting standalone adventure to check out.
